This Gravesend Cycles custom took 1st place in the ultra-competitive FreeStyle class at the New York round of the Ultimate Builder Custom Bike Show in 2012. The 1973 Shovelhead features a rebuilt engine with engraved heads and has 10:1 compression.

Copper Mike used numerous antique gauges and parts and rebuilt them into functional pieces. He built the hand clutch with an old Harley mouse trap, the floor boards are made from old fire extinguishers while the air cleaner is a brass box with a welded–in trumpet horn. Head light and taillight are sourced from a submarine, a retooled dash mounted compass serves as an analog GPS while the saddlebags were made from a leather Russian ammunition bag.

The Anatomy of Steampunk

Steampunk is a sub-genre of science fiction that typically features steam-powered machinery, especially in a setting inspired by industrialized Western civilization during the 19th century. Therefore, steampunk works are often set in an alternative history of the 19th century’s British Victorian era or American “Wild West”, in a post-apocalyptic future during which steam power has regained mainstream use, or in a fantasy world that similarly employs steam power.

Steampunk perhaps most recognizably features anachronistic technologies or retro-futuristic inventions as people in the 19th century might have envisioned them, and is likewise rooted in the era’s perspective on fashion, culture, architectural style, and art. Such technology may include fictional machines like those found in the works of H. G. Wells and Jules Verne, or the modern authors Philip Pullman, Scott Westerfeld, and China Mieville.
